What do detection systems do?

Automatic fire detection systems are essential alarm systems that sound when they detect smoke, heat or gas. This gives occupants time to evacuate the building as well as notify the fire service. Detection systems shorten the time between when a fire is detected and when it is put out, which lessens damage and allows more time for everyone to safely exit the building.

Thanks to advanced technology, detection systems do even more now. They can close emergency doors, turn off air circulation systems and even alert the fire service directly. You can see the exact location where the fumes were detected so you can determine what the source of the smoke is.

INSTALLED AND MAINTAINED TO MEET YOUR NEEDS

When is a smoke detection system required?

The National Code of Construction determines when a detection system is required.  Generally speaking, there are two main determining factors:
  • Building class - If a building is designed to house sleeping occupants, it is extremely likely that a detection system will be required.
  • Building size and/or height - If a building is considered a high rise, it is likely a detection system will be required.
Every building is different and requires a different fire detection system configuration.  We can provide advice as to what system will suit your environment and if proposed building changes will trigger the need to upgrade.
If you building already has a detection system installed, it is required by the local building fire safety regulations to be maintained and tested as per AS1851 and all other emergency system provisions such as Minister's Specification SA76.  Failure to carry out regulated maintenance can have serious ramifications such as system failure, costly false alarm calls and voiding any possible insurance claims when needed.
